Winemaker’s Dinner with Thierry Haberer: Montesquieu Winery Celebrates Release of Juntarse

Just before the release of our groundbreaking 2010 Montesquieu Juntarse at the end of October, we had the pleasure to reconnect and share a great meal and wines with Thierry Haberer, winemaker for the renowned Michel Rolland.   Thierry oversees wine production for the international Rolland Collection including the Mariflor wines from the Uco Valley, which we represent exclusively here in the U.S.

Thierry is also an integral part of our collaboration with Michel in our new project together, a series of co-branded wines from Mendoza’s Uco Valley crafted especially for our Montesquieu clients. The Juntarse– a maverick blend of Cabernet, Syrah and Malbec from some of Michel’s top vines – is our first release from this venture. Throughout the process, Michel and Thierry worked closely with our team to create a wine of exceptional quality and singular character.

Just before the dinner, Thierry was in Napa consulting for the Bryant Family. He flew down to Los Angeles just to join us, and then flew back to Napa later the same evening. Thierry was an excellent host to us on our most recent trip to Bodegas Rolland in Argentina in April this year, so we were very pleased to be able to return the favor, if only for one evening!

Thierry, Fonda and a group of Montesquieu wine brokers and managers dined at BLT Steak in Los Angeles, located in the famed Le Dome space on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood.  They were in the private dining room, which was perfectly positioned in front of the extensive glass-walled wine cellar. The ambiance is warm, yet sophisticated with rich ebony tables and walnut floors with modern lines.

The three course meal, designed by famed chef Brian Moyers, was served French service style, where platters were brought and portioned at the table – a wonderful way to experience variety as there were 4 different selections for each course of starter, main course and dessert. Selections included Crab Cake and Meyer Lemon Radish Salad, Tuna Tartare with Avocado Soy Lime Dressing, Slowly Braised Short Ribs with Thyme and Garlic, Rib Eye with Red Wine Reduction Sauce, Crepe Souffle with Passion Fruit Sauce and Lemon Meringue Pie with Blueberry and Lemon Sorbet.

As delightful as the meal was, the highlight of the evening was the pure pleasure of drinking our 2009 Mariflor Pinot Noir and our 2010 Montesquieu Juntarse – both remarkable wines – and hearing Thierry speak passionately about them.  He shared stories and insight about working with Michel Rolland that made a lasting impression on everyone and brought to life the adage:  “Do what you love.”

Great things come of this passion, and it is clear that Michel and Thierry are doing exactly what they love and having a great time doing it!  It’s no wonder we and our clients enjoy these wines so much!

Our evening with Thierry was a pleasure, enjoying the Juntarse together, sharing impressions since we last tasted together from barrel in April. He described the wine throughout the evening at BLT with respect to the amazing terroir in the Uco Valley, Michel’s vision and masterful blending, as well as the pleasure of working with us on such an innovative blend. Paired with a great meal and sipped over the course of hours, the Juntarse unfurled its flavors seamlessly, with such sensuality and richness, balanced with the complexity and structure that shows how beautifully it will evolve in the cellar.
