Las Vegas Shows Big Heart for the Children of St. Jude

May 12, 2011, by: Lisa Duff Khajavi

There are some big hearts in Vegas, and they’re getting quite a bit of attention!   In various locations around town you will find impressive five-foot tall sculptures, each one custom created by a professional local artist as part of the upcoming St. Jude “An Affair of the Heart” fundraiser gala May 21, 2011 at the Mandarin Oriental in Las Vegas.

Heart of Las Vegas by Alexander P. Huerta

The hearts were originally cast from a sculpture created by well known local sculptor Miguel Rodriguez. Each artist selected for the project created their own design, painting the hearts with their interpretations of “Inside the Heart of a Child”.  The results are an inspiration—vibrant and multi-colored—each with an expressive and unique genre. They have caused quite the sensation, bringing timely attention to the wonderful work being done by St. Jude.

Montesquieu Winery is participating as the exclusive wine sponsor of “An Affair of the Heart” and is also the proud sponsor of one of the ten “Hearts of Las Vegas”.   Our particular work of art was designed by local artist Alexander P. Huerta.

Alexander, a resident of Las Vegas for over 25 years, has been painting since 1996. After thinking about painting for a couple of years, a trip to the art store sent him on to his great “art adventure”.  In October of 2002 he started showing at First Friday, the Las Vegas monthly art festival.  From there his path grew as a working artist and he hasn’t looked back.

Now in his own studio, located in the well known Arts Factory in the Las Vegas Arts District, PeaceNart Studio is the place that has allowed him to grow most as an artist. With great passion for art, people and life, he spends everyday creating, learning and sharing with the arts community of Las Vegas.

Alexander’s inspiration while creating this heart came from the idea that every child’s heart needs knowledge of love. He hopes that “every thought, word and action toward a child should have every intention of adding positively to their heart and soul”. The letters of the alphabet painted on the sculpture represent the “child-like learning process of love”.

All of these heartfelt creations are providing an important component to the fundraiser, and as such several will be auctioned off the evening of May 21, and the others are available for purchase. We are delighted to report that our heart painted by Alexander P. Huerta has already been sold!  To see some of the other artists’ creations, see more here.

Stay tuned, as we will be sharing all about our experiences at the red carpet gala dinner “An Affair of the Heart” right here on our Montesquieu Wine Lovers Blog!  Cheers!
